"All cities have similar functions that they automate in areas such as tax collection, real estate assessment, budget preparation and management, finance and accounting, public safety, utility billing, and parks and recreation," said the City's Director of Information Technology Andy Stein. "These systems are very similar in capabilities from one city to the other, yet all of us have been custom building many applications because no practical means of sharing had been established. The time has come for government agencies at all levels to eliminate duplication of effort in software development. With modern capabilities available today such as Internet accessible shared software repositories, it is much easier to work together with other agencies to develop software that benefits not only those involved in the development process but others who may later need similar software as well. This collaboration will reduce the need to invest in redundant and costly custom built software components and save taxpayer dollars."
